Description
Adoration of the Magi, Sevillian Master, 17th century
Oil on canvas. A scene depicting the Adoration of the Magi unfolds within a warm, dimly lit stable, where the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child as the Magi approach reverently with lavish gifts. In the foreground, one of the Magi kneels, offering a golden cup, wrapped in a flowing cloak of ochre and gold tones that visually dominates the composition through an elegant interplay of folds. Pages, soldiers and attendants, adorned with turbans and exotic garments, surround him, creating a dynamic scene and a rich colour palette. Saint Joseph observes discreetly from the right-hand side, next to the donkey, reinforcing the intimate and devotional nature of the scene. The lighting focuses on the Child and the Virgin’s face, creating a strong chiaroscuro contrast that accentuates the spatial depth and spiritual contemplation of the scene. The fluid brushstrokes and chromatic transparencies reveal the influence of the 17th-century Sevillian Baroque school, closely resembling the styles of Murillo and Valdés Leal, where religious emotion is combined with a refined narrative theatricality. The work stands out for the expressiveness of its figures, the richness of its textiles, and its carefully crafted use of light, constituting a remarkable example of Spanish Baroque devotional painting. Dimensions: 104 x 78 cm; 117 x 92 cm.
