Description
Attributed to José de Vergara, Valencian School, 18th century Oil on canvas. A devotional composition imbued with a delicate Rococo sensibility, depicting the Christ Child enthroned upon the celestial orb, blessing with his right hand whilst holding the triumphant banner of the Resurrection. Beside him, the infant Saint John the Baptist reverently points to Christ’s divinity, holding the cross with a scroll, whilst another child angel presents the Tablets of the Law, reinforcing the redemptive and doctrinal symbolism of the scene. Above, a choir of cherubs envelops the composition in a luminous and ethereal atmosphere that intensifies the celestial character of the whole. The work is notable for the softness of the flesh tones, the idealised sweetness of the faces, and the delicate, luminous transition of the golden and pink tones that model the figures with refined elegance. The fluid, ethereal brushstrokes, combined with the balanced composition and the serene expressions of the figures, reveal clear affinities with 18th-century Valencian religious painting and the style of José de Vergara, characterised by academic grace and the influence of the late Italian Baroque. The enveloping luminosity and chromatic refinement lend the scene a profoundly contemplative and spiritual character. The work is a remarkable example of 18th-century Spanish devotional painting, in which the ideal of beauty and religious emotion merge with great aesthetic harmony. Dimensions: 80 x 56 cm; 95 x 75 cm.
