The Holy Family with Saint Anne and the Holy Spirit, Spanish School, 17th century
Oil on canvas. A devotional scene of intimate contemplation depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child whilst Saint Anne gently turns her face towards him in affectionate contemplation. Behind the figures stands Saint Joseph, shrouded in shadow, lending depth and compositional balance to the scene. Above, the dove of the Holy Spirit descends, carrying an olive branch as a symbol of peace and divine grace. The Child blesses with his right hand, establishing a spiritual axis that unifies the composition and focuses the viewer’s attention on the sacred mystery of the Incarnation. The work is notable for the soft rendering of the flesh tones, the tenebrist-inspired contrasts of light, and the warm colour scheme of ochres, blues and reds that envelop the scene in an atmosphere of serene spirituality.
