Adoration of the Shepherds, Italian, Early Renaissance, Italy – 16th century.
Oil on panel. Dimensions: 83 x 82 cm; frame: 104 x 91 cm. A scene depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds, set in an architectural stable opening onto the urban landscape. In the centre, the kneeling Virgin Mary contemplates the Christ Child lying on white cloths, accompanied by Saint Joseph and several shepherds approaching with offerings and animals. Above the composition, angels appear carrying scrolls bearing celestial inscriptions, whilst in the background, buildings and arches enhance the sense of depth. The figures are arranged dynamically and gesticulate expressively, with intense chromatic contrasts between reds, greens and ochres characteristic of 16th-century European religious painting.
