Description
Virgin and Child with Saints, Italian School, circle of Ippolito Scarsella, 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 101 x 79 cm; 124 x 104 cm with frame. A devotional composition of refined Mannerist sensibility depicting the Virgin enthroned, holding the Christ Child, whilst several sacred figures are grouped around them in a setting opening out onto the landscape. The Marian figure, draped in a pink tunic with delicate pearly highlights and deep greenish drapery, gently inclines her face in an attitude of contemplation and maternal tenderness. The Child, with his fleshy anatomy and luminous modelling, establishes a gestural link with the surrounding figures, amongst whom stand out an adolescent angel with golden hair and a Franciscan saint kneeling in contemplative fervour. In the lower section, a small musical angel adds a dynamic and ceremonial counterpoint to the scene. The composition is organised by gentle diagonals and a balanced interplay of gazes that draws attention to the central group, whilst the blue sky and architectural backgrounds create atmospheric depth. The brushwork reveals a fluid and elegant technique, particularly evident in the translucent rendering of the fabrics and the modelling of the flesh tones, with a rich palette of pinks, blues and warm ochres that intensifies the spirituality of the scene. The work shows clear affinities with Bolognese and Ferrarese painting of the early 17th century, linked to the circle of Ippolito Scarsella, where echoes of late Mannerism persist, integrated with an early Baroque sensibility oriented towards emotion and religious theatricality. It stands out for its compositional harmony, the quality of the light, and the expressive delicacy of the figures, constituting a remarkable example of Italian devotional painting during the transition from Mannerism to the Baroque.
