VENETIAN OR NEAPOLITAN MASTER - Pair of devotional copper plates depicting the Virgin of Sorrows and Christ, 17th century Oil on copper. Dimensions 23 x 17 cm; 28 x 21 cm with frame. A pair of small devotional compositions conceived as images of intense spiritual contemplation, centred on the Virgin of Sorrows and Christ carrying the cross on the way to Calvary. The Marian figure is depicted wrapped in a wide, deep blue mantle and a light-coloured headdress, raising her gaze in a gesture of restrained sorrow, whilst her clasped hands and the sword piercing her chest allude to the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin. The golden radiance surrounding her head intensifies the sacred and meditative character of the scene. In the second copper panel, Christ is depicted turning his face towards the viewer whilst carrying the cross on his shoulder, crowned with thorns, and with his face marked by rivulets of blood that accentuate the emotional drama of the image. The rendering of the flesh tones and the delicacy of the facial features contrast with the darkness of the background, creating a powerful sense of devotional intimacy. Both works are notable for the technical finesse characteristic of painting on copper, a medium that produces a smooth, compact surface with great chromatic luminosity and precision of detail.
