Description
Crucifixion of Saint Peter, Italian School, Early 17th Century
Oil on copper. Dimensions 65 x 50 cm; 81 x 65 cm with frame. A highly dramatic martyrdom scene centred on the inverted crucifixion of Saint Peter, rendered through a complex composition of muscular figures and intertwined movements that visually convey the ascent of the cross. The apostle appears suspended upside down whilst several executioners manoeuvre ropes and timbers in a violent physical exertion accentuated by the anatomical contortions and tense gestures of the bodies. The pyramidal arrangement of the figures creates a powerful sense of instability and dynamism, whilst the open landscape in the background—featuring soldiers, onlookers and distant architecture—expands the narrative dimension of the scene. Above the composition, a celestial rupture emerges from which an angel descends bearing the palm of martyrdom, introducing the supernatural and triumphant element that contrasts with the earthly brutality of the torment. The vigorous anatomy of the figures, the sculptural modelling of the nude bodies, and the refined treatment of light reveal a solid foundation in the late Italian Mannerist tradition, already evolving towards early Baroque styles. The copper support lends clarity and chromatic depth, allowing for meticulous detail in anatomical, landscape and atmospheric elements. The composition shows influences from the great Roman and Bolognese painting of the early 17th century, where classical monumentality and emotional theatricality converge in religious scenes of profound spiritual impact. The work stands out for its compositional complexity, the expressive energy of the figures, and its meticulous technical quality, constituting a remarkable example of Italian sacred painting linked to the heroic and devotional language of the early Baroque.
