Description
Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist, attributed to Gregorio Gamarra, Cuzco School, 17th century.
Oil on copper. Dimensions: 22.5 x 16.5 cm; frame: 33 x 27 cm. A devotional scene depicting the Virgin Mary, shown from the waist up, holding the Christ Child, accompanied by the infant Saint John the Baptist in the foreground. The Virgin is draped in a light veil and a blue mantle over a red tunic, her face gently turned towards the children. The Christ Child, partially nude and with a radiant golden halo, rests on his mother’s shoulder whilst gazing at the viewer. Saint John the Baptist offers a tray of fruit, including grapes and pomegranates, symbolic attributes linked to the Passion and redemption. The dark background and the close arrangement of the figures reinforce the intimate nature of the composition. The work is attributed to Gregorio Gamarra, a painter active in Cusco and associated with the circle of Bernardo Bitti, in a Mannerist style characteristic of the transition from Italian to Andean art.
