Description
16th-century Italian Master – Saint Sebastian
Oil on panel. Dimensions: 68 x 62 cm; 82 x 61 cm. A religious scene depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, shown tied to a tree whilst several executioners carry out the punishment under the symbolic presence of an angel bearing the heavenly crown. The saint’s naked form becomes the visual focal point of the composition, illuminated by an intense light that contrasts with the dark tones of the surroundings and the soldiers’ garments. The figures display dynamic poses and theatrical gestures characteristic of late Mannerism and the transition to the Italian Baroque of the late 16th century. The background landscape and open sky lend atmospheric depth, whilst the serpentine movement of the figures creates a composition of great spiritual and dramatic tension. The dense brushwork and sculptural modelling of the bodies reveal a notable influence of late 16th-century Italian religious painting. The work stands out for its emotional intensity, compositional complexity, and the devotional power typical of Counter-Reformation depictions of martyrdom. 68 x 62 cm.
