Description
Musician with a shawm. Neapolitan or Genoese Caravaggist school. 17th century.
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 83 x 67 cm (unframed), 105 x 87 cm (framed). The painting depicts the bust of a musician intently playing a shawm, a double-reed wind instrument characteristic of the 16th and 17th centuries. The male figure emerges from a dark background, his face partially illuminated by a side light that casts dramatic shadows on his features. He wears an ochre-coloured tunic or doublet with red sleeves, a starched white collar, and a dark, wide-brimmed hat that blends into the shadows. The treatment of light, which accentuates the hands and face, together with the expressive realism of the gesture and the figure’s introspective demeanour, directly evokes the models of Caravaggesque naturalism. The brushwork is dense and meticulous, with a striking chiaroscuro that lends a sense of monumentality to the figure and depth to the scene. This type of half-length portrait, focusing on musicians, street vendors or other ordinary people, was common in 17th-century Italian painting, particularly in Rome and Naples, as part of an aesthetic that sought to depict everyday humanity with emotional intensity. The work stands out for its restraint, visual power and contemplative character. 83 x 67 cm (unframed), 105 x 87 cm (framed).
