Description
The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. Hispanic Baroque School. 18th century. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 103 x 80 cm and 116 x 92 cm. The work depicts the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, one of the key episodes of Christ’s childhood. In the centre, the elderly Simeon holds the Child in his arms whilst uttering the prophecy, in the presence of the Virgin Mary and several secondary figures who complete the composition. The use of colour emphasises the hierarchy of the scene, with intense reds, deep greens and golds that draw attention to the main figures. The tenebrist lighting creates strong contrasts that accentuate the spirituality of the moment, whilst the faces display intense expressiveness, particularly those of the Virgin and Simeon. The arrangement of the figures, the rendering of the drapery, and the construction of the space suggest a direct influence of Spanish Baroque painting, particularly the Seville school, with echoes of Murillo. The narrative approach and emotional depth of the scene place it within the catechetical tradition of 18th-century Baroque painting, intended to move and spiritually edify the viewer. Dimensions: 103 x 80 cm and 116 x 92 cm.
