Description
Archangel vanquished by the devil. Mexican Viceroyalty School. 18th century.
Oil on canvas. Dimensions 150 × 100 cm. A winged angelic figure, clad in armour, wearing a feathered helmet and carrying a large metal shield, rises triumphantly, subduing the defeated demon with his foot. The angel raises its sword in a gesture of victory. The composition is dynamic, featuring a theatrical interplay of flowing fabrics and contrasting colours: red, green and gold. The figure alludes to the Archangel Michael, although it may also be linked to syncretic iconographies typical of viceregal art, such as the angel of justice or faith. The execution reveals influences from the European Baroque, adapted to the New Spanish context, with defined lines and symbolic emphasis. The image conveys a moral and spiritual force characteristic of Counter-Reformation discourse, extolling the struggle between good and evil.
