Estimate €5,500 - €9,000
Description
Biblical scene. Italian School. 17th century Oil on canvas. The work depicts the biblical scene of the encounter between Jacob and Rachel, set in a pastoral landscape featuring livestock and shepherds. In the foreground, the kneeling male figure symbolises Jacob, extending his hand towards a young woman who, with a delicate gesture and her head slightly bowed, returns the greeting with an expression of restrained tenderness. Beside her, a woman wearing a red headdress and making a protective gesture observes the scene, whilst an old man in purple robes suggests patriarchal authority, possibly Laban. The composition balances the dynamism of the figures with the serenity of their gazes, highlighting the treatment of fabrics, folds and lighting. The use of intense colours such as vermilion and ultramarine, as well as the richness of the forms and the drama of the figures, reveal a clear influence of the Italian Baroque, specifically the 17th-century Venetian school. The scene emphasises familial and devotional values, integrating Old Testament narrative elements into a format that invites emotional contemplation. Dimensions: 156 x 128 cm (unframed), 172 x 150 cm (framed).
