Description
A pair of scenes depicting the Nativity and the Adoration of the Shepherds, Flemish/Italian School, 17th/18th century
Oil on copper. Dimensions: 35 cm x 27 cm; 42 cm x 34 cm. A pair of religious compositions dedicated to the Nativity and the Adoration of the Shepherds, brought to life through a complex arrangement of devotional figures, angels and shadowy architecture. The Virgin and Child are the focal point of both scenes, surrounded by figures arranged in a carefully studied pyramidal composition that intensifies the spiritual and narrative impact of the whole. Angels suspended amongst dense clouds lend an upward momentum and Baroque theatricality, whilst intense reddish, green and blue tones enrich the chromatic depth of the work. The technical refinement characteristic of painting on copper is evident in the precision of the drawing, the smoothness of the light transitions, and the glossy finish of the painted surface. The formal language combines Mannerist influences with Baroque sensibilities, evoking models prevalent in Flemish and Italian workshops during the 17th and 18th centuries. The wooden frames with gilded metalwork reinforce the sumptuous and collectable nature of the set, likely intended for private devotion or an aristocratic cabinet. The work stands out for its narrative richness, compositional elegance, and the intense spiritual atmosphere that defines European religious painting of this period.
