Description
The Liberation of San Pedro – Francisco Meneses Osorio (Seville, c. 1640 – ibid., January 1721)
18th century – Oil on canvas: 138 x 105 cm. Framed dimensions: 132 x 99 cm. Francisco Meneses Osorio (Seville, c. 1640 – ibid., January 1721) was a Spanish painter. His work most closely followed the style of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. It is not known who his teacher was or in which workshop he trained. By 1666 he was already a fully established member of the Seville painting community. At that same time, he was reported to have taken part in a public auction of the estate of the sculptor José de Arce and, in that same year, he was already a member of the Academy of Painting founded by Murillo, Herrera and Valdés Leal in 1660. He donated a painting of the Immaculate Conception to the academy. In 1668 he was appointed steward of the academy. However, he left the post around 1673. Bibliography: Serra Giráldez, Sofía (1990).
