Oil on canvas, dimensions (excluding frame): 256 x 175 cm. Bibliography: NY), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York (1985). The Age of Caravaggio (in English). Metropolitan Museum of Art. ISBN 9780870993800. Accessed. Giuseppe Cesari, known as the Cavaliere d’Arpino, was an Italian Mannerist painter of the late 16th century. The energy, emotional truthfulness and vivid colouring of his paintings foreshadow the Baroque style of the 17th century. He was a favoured artist in Rome under both Clement and Sixtus V. Furthermore, he was the head of the workshop where Caravaggio trained upon the young painter’s arrival in Rome.
