Description
The Assumption of Mary, 16th-century Spanish Mannerist school
An exceptional oil on crescent-shaped panel. Oil on board. With a period frame in carved and gilded wood. Panel dimensions: 215 x 227 cm. Frame dimensions: 240 x 250 cm. This panel depicting the Assumption of the Virgin is a clear example of the painting produced in the mid-16th century in Spanish workshops, probably in Castile due to the Berruguetesque influence (by Alonso Berruguete (c. 1486–1561), not his father), which is evident in the conception of the figures, both in their faces and in their unstable and nervous postures. Despite its quality, it is a painting produced in a local workshop, which suggests that it was commissioned by a businessman, clergyman, lawyer or religious community with the intention of placing it at the centre of their private oratory or a convent chapel. Origin: Spanish private collection.
