Description
Nativity of the Virgin, Hispanic American Colonial School, 18th century Oil on panel. A domestic scene of profound devotional significance depicting the birth of the Virgin Mary in an architectural interior, rendered with a naive sense of perspective and a delicate narrative sensibility. The composition features Saint Anne reclining after giving birth, several female attendants, and a group of angels that envelops the scene in a supernatural atmosphere. In the centre, the infant figure is the focus of the main characters’ attention, whilst the staggered arrangement of the architectural elements lends depth to the space. The colour palette of warm, earthy tones, enriched by intense reds and soft blues, reflects the colonial religious painting tradition influenced by Spanish Baroque models adapted to American workshops. The technique reveals a popular style with remarkable devotional charm, featuring figures of gentle expressiveness and an ornamental treatment typical of viceregal painting intended for private worship. The work forms part of the Marian iconography developed in the Hispanic world during the 18th century, where the depiction of episodes from the life of the Virgin took on great catechetical and emotional significance. Dimensions: 46 x 33 cm; 63 x 48 cm.
