Description
Ritual tubular jade bead, Zhanguo period, 5th–3rd century BC. c.
Carved and perforated jade. Measures 5.5 cm. An oval-sectioned tubular element decorated on all four sides with geometric relief patterns formed by archaic motifs of volutes and stylised hooks associated with the Taotie and Goujiao repertoires of Chinese ritual tradition. The axial perforation, achieved using a trepan, demonstrates a sophisticated lapidary technique typical of aristocratic workshops during the Warring States period. The polished surface exhibits subtle chromatic variations and wear consistent with its age. The strict ornamental regularity and the abstraction of the motifs reflect the symbolic evolution of jade as a prestige material linked to funerary practices and spiritual concepts of immortality and protection. The piece synthesises technical refinement and ritual significance within the tradition of ancient Chinese lapidary art. 5.5 cm.
