Description
Funerary ushabti of an Egyptian dignitary, New Kingdom, 16th–12th century BC.
Carved and polychromed wood. Approximately 20 cm high. A funerary ushabti figure depicting an Egyptian dignitary in a mummiform pose, with arms crossed over the chest and eroded remnants of ritual agricultural attributes. The figure has a shaved head covered by a partially worn, tripartite black wig, a stylised face with schematic features, and eyes outlined in dark paint. The body retains hieroglyphic inscriptions painted vertically on the front, probably referring to the name and titles of the deceased. The original polychromy in black, ochre and reddish tones remains visible beneath a cracked patina resulting from the natural ageing of the wood. The geometric simplification and absolute frontality reflect the funerary tradition of the Egyptian New Kingdom, where these figures symbolically served as eternal servants in the afterlife. The piece is notable for its significant archaeological value and the expressive intensity derived from its historical wear. Approximately 20 cm high.
