Saint George and the Dragon, Russian icon, 19th century.
Tempera and polychrome on panel. Dimensions: 42 x 35 cm. An icon in the Eastern tradition depicting Saint George on horseback, spearing a dragon of intense green hues, whilst a crowned princess observes the scene from a walled fortress populated with figures. The composition displays a marked frontality and a schematic narrative style characteristic of Russian and Orthodox iconography. The linear outlines, vibrant colours and flat application of paint reinforce the spiritual nature of the image, conceived more as a devotional object than a naturalistic representation.
