Description
18th-century Thai Buddha
Finely chased gilt bronze. Measures 71 cm in height. A figure of the Buddha standing on a raised, stepped base, hands in the abhayamudra, and draped in a sumptuous utarasanga decorated with floral motifs and jewels in relief. The face displays a serene expression and an introspective gaze, crowned by a tall headdress with an ascending finial and wide ornamental side flaps. The stylised, vertical silhouette accentuates the spiritual character of the image, whilst the rich decoration of the attire reveals the courtly influence of the Ratanakosin Kingdom. The gilding and ornamental relief work lend the sculpture an intense ritual luminosity associated with 19th-century Thai Buddhist art. The work reflects the continuity of devotional traditions in Southeast Asia and the refined synthesis between spirituality and ceremonial luxury characteristic of Thai sacred sculpture. 71 cm.
