Description
Mandalay Buddha, 19th century
Patinated and partially lacquered bronze. Measures 48 cm in height. A standing Buddha figure in a hieratic pose, holding a citron in his right hand, whilst the broad, undulating folds of his monastic robe fall with remarkable dynamism. The oval face, with its serene expression, is crowned with an ushnisha, highlighted with ochre lacquer, a symbol of spiritual enlightenment. The inlaid eyes convey an intense, expressive vitality that contrasts with the serenity of the figure as a whole. The vertical composition and the fluidity of the drapery reflect the characteristic aesthetic of the Kingdom of Mandalay, where Buddhist sculpture achieved great formal refinement during the 19th century. The smooth modelling and elegant proportions convey a profound sense of contemplative calm and spiritual refinement, characteristic of late Burmese art. 48 cm.
