Description
19th-century Burmese reliquary
Lacquered and gilded wood with inlays. Measures 78 x 30 cm. A reliquary offering box in the form of a stepped stupa, comprising a globular body and a tall central spire, divided into successive, decreasing circular bands. The surface is richly decorated with vegetal scrolls, floral motifs and small, lustrous inlays arranged in ornamental bands. The structure combines vertical monumentality with decorative refinement, evoking the sacred Buddhist architecture of South-East Asia. The gilding shows signs of wear and patina from devotional use, which accentuate the ritual character of the piece. The ornamental complexity and the balance of proportions reflect the artisanal sophistication of 19th-century Burma, where this type of reliquary served ceremonial functions related to the preservation of sacred objects and religious offerings. 78 x 30 cm.
