Description
"Ho Ho", Chinese School, Song Dynasty, 10th–13th century Hand-modelled porcelain stoneware with cream slip and dark mineral pigments. Dimensions not specified. A ceramic sculpture depicting one of the ‘Ho Ho’ twins in a reclining position, with his arms crossed beneath his chin and his body folded over his legs. The face features stylised and delicately rendered features, with almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows accentuated by dark pigments. The surface displays a distinctive network of crackle glaze and subtle ornamental motifs on the neck and wrists, adding visual richness to the composition. The piece exemplifies the Song Dynasty’s aesthetic sensibility for refined forms and expressive serenity, combining rounded volumes with a refined and contemplative execution characteristic of the Chinese ceramic tradition. Its strong sculptural presence and formal restraint make this work a remarkable example of medieval Oriental art. It achieves a balanced harmony between simplicity and visual spirituality.
