Description
Buddha head, Burmese School of Pagan, 16th century Beige sandstone lacquered in reddish-ochre tones. Measures 47 cm, 57 cm including the base. A Buddha head with a serene expression and youthful features, characterised by an extraordinary formal synthesis typical of Burmese art from the Pagan kingdom. The face features half-closed eyes and a barely perceptible smile, conveying a profound sense of inner calm and spirituality. The prominent ushnisha, surmounted by a pear-shaped rasmi, symbolises enlightenment and transcendent knowledge. The softly modelled surfaces and warm ochre polychromy accentuate the piece’s silent monumentality, whilst the elongated ears and the geometric refinement of the face allude to the aesthetic ideals of Southeast Asian Buddhism. The work stands out for the meditative intensity of its sculptural presence and the refined elegance of its modelling. 47 cm, 57 cm including the base.
