Description
Virabhadra with mandorla, Vijayanagar school, 16th century Carved grey sandstone. Measures 56 x 28 cm. Sculpture of Virabhadra, the warrior form of Shiva, depicted standing on a rectangular pedestal and surrounded by an architectural mandorla. The deity is shown with multiple arms, intended to hold ritual attributes that are now partially eroded, maintaining a frontal pose of intense hieratic presence. The bare torso, the necklaces and the complex ornamental structure reflect the Hindu iconography of South India developed during the Vijayanagar Empire. The carving exhibits gently eroded surfaces which nevertheless retain the volumetric clarity and symbolic monumentality of the whole. The composition conveys contained energy and spiritual authority, synthesising devotion and dynastic power within the sculptural tradition of the Deccan Hindu temples. 56 x 28 cm.
