Description
In the style of Juan de Juni, 16th century – Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Hispano-Flemish
Carved, polychromed and gilded wood. Dimensions: 45 x 23 x 14 cm. A pair of three-dimensional sculptures of the apostles, identifiable as Saint Peter and Saint Paul by their traditional attributes: one holding the keys and a book, and the other holding a sword and a sacred scroll. The figures display a pronounced verticality, ample cloaks with broken folds, and intensely individualised bearded faces with restrained gestures that emphasise their doctrinal authority. The polychromy and gilding lend a rich ornamental quality, particularly to the garments, where the brocade and chromatic nuances enhance the carved surface. The work follows Romanist models of 16th-century Spanish sculpture, closely resembling the devotional style of altarpieces, with echoes that can be linked to Castilian or Navarrese circles. It stands out for the monumental grandeur of the ensemble, the iconographic clarity, and the expressive power of its silhouettes.
