In the style of Juan de Juni, 16th century – Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Hispano-Flemish Carved, polychromed and gilded wood. Dimensions: 45 x 23 x 14 cm. A pair of three-dimensional sculptures of the apostles, identifiable as Saint Peter and Saint Paul by their traditional attributes: one holding the keys and a book, and the other holding a sword and a sacred scroll. The figures display a pronounced verticality, ample cloaks with broken folds, and intensely individualised bearded faces with restrained gestures that emphasise their doctrinal authority. The polychromy and gilding lend a rich ornamental quality, particularly to the garments, where the brocade and chromatic nuances enhance the carved surface. The work follows Romanist models of 16th-century Spanish sculpture, closely resembling the devotional style of altarpieces, with echoes that can be linked to Castilian or Navarrese circles.
