Saint Anne teaching the Virgin Mary to read, Spanish school, 17th century Carved and polychromed wood. Measures 18 x 12 x 8 cm. A sculptural group depicting Saint Anne seated with the Virgin Mary as a child at her side, united by the open book which forms the centre of the composition and emphasises the doctrinal significance of the scene. This small-scale composition, with its strong expressive focus, is notable for the affectionate tilt of their heads, the closeness of their hands, and the gentle flow of their drapery. The polychromy, now worn, still retains blue, gold and reddish tones that enliven the carved surface. The iconography, widespread in Baroque religious art, emphasises Mary’s education as an example of virtue and piety. The piece stands out for its intimate character, its devotional eloquence, and the refinement of its craftsmanship.
