Description
Polychrome wood-carved nativity scene, colonial style, 19th century
Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: Saint Joseph 23 x 16 x 14 cm, Virgin Mary 23 x 16 x 14 cm (approx.), and the Infant Jesus 10 x 7 x 5 cm. A Nativity group comprising Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary kneeling in adoration, accompanied by a freestanding figure of the Child Jesus reclining with outstretched arms. The gentle faces, the reserved gestures and the soft folds of the garments lend the group an intense devotional tenderness. The polychromy, in shades of red, blue and gold, reinforces the ceremonial aspect of the figures and ties in with popular traditions of religious imagery. The work reflects a 19th-century colonial style, characterised by its intimate and pious nature, evident in its simple expressiveness and its ability to create a scene of spiritual intimacy.
