Saint Michael the Archangel in polychrome wood, Mexican Colonial School, 17th–18th century Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 42 × 28 × 19 cm. A sculpture depicting the Archangel Saint Michael standing over the vanquished demon, with outstretched wings and wearing gilded and brightly coloured military attire. The modelling of the face, with its serene and resolute expression, reflects the Hispanic-American Baroque tradition, in which colour and gilding accentuate the spiritual theatricality. It retains its original polychromy, with only minor losses, and the carving details are of excellent quality.
