Description
Ceres, the Goddess of the Harvest, in bronze, French School, 19th century
Patinated cast bronze. Dimensions: 50 x 20 x 12 cm. An allegorical female sculpture associated with the theme of the grape harvest, depicted in a dynamic pose with her torso partially covered by flowing drapery and her arm raised, holding bunches of grapes. The figure displays an elegant twist of the torso, inspired by Baroque and Neoclassical models, emphasising movement and the idealised sensuality of the anatomy. The richness of the modelling, the fluidity of the folds, and the quality of the dark patina—which accentuates the contrasts in volume—are particularly noteworthy. The work reflects the 19th-century French sculptural tradition, characterised by the revival of mythological and allegorical themes treated with academic refinement and technical virtuosity. The composition conveys dynamism, theatricality and an intense decorative presence characteristic of European historicist sculpture. 50 x 20 cm.
