Description
Art Nouveau female bust, signed H. Jacobs, Franco-Belgian School, circa 1900
Polychrome terracotta. Measures 32 x 36 cm. A female bust of refined Art Nouveau aesthetics, characterised by an elegant stylisation of features and a marked decorative sensibility typical of the movement. The young woman is portrayed with a serene expression and a downcast gaze, enveloped in an atmosphere of idealised delicacy accentuated by the softness of her flesh tones and the undulating modelling of her hair, arranged in long, curved strands that fall over her shoulders. A diadem adorned with reddish cabochons runs across her forehead, adding a subtle, precious touch, whilst the black garment, decorated with sinuous and stylised gold motifs, exemplifies the Art Nouveau taste for linear ornamentation inspired by plant and organic forms. The composition rests on a base of fluid, enveloping forms that extend the curvilinear movement of the bust, reinforcing the sense of decorative unity between the figure and its support. The polychrome enamelling and satin finish of the surface lend remarkable visual richness, particularly in the contrasts between the ivory tones of the face and the dark hues of the clothing. The H. Jacobs mark and the commercial reference to the gallery “A La Confiance Horlogerie E. Pierre Bijouterie” place the piece within the Franco-Belgian decorative tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period marked by the full flowering of Symbolist and Modernist tastes in European applied arts. The work stands out for the harmony between sculpture and decoration, the elegance of its lines, and its strong ornamental quality, constituting an attractive example of Art Nouveau decorative sculpture.
