Description
GIOVANNI BASTIANINI (Fiesole, 1830 – Florence, 1868) – Cosimo de’ Medici
Polychrome terracotta bust. Dimensions: 49 x 55 x 28 cm. This important polychrome terracotta bust depicts a member of the Medici family, traditionally identified as Cosimo de’ Medici, and is attributed to Giovanni Bastianini, a Florentine sculptor active in Tuscany in the mid-19th century and renowned for his extraordinary Renaissance-style recreations. The work exhibits a distinctly historicist style, with meticulous modelling of the face, detailed rendering of physiognomic features, and a strong evocation of Italian Quattrocento portraiture. Bastianini achieved great renown for his ability to recreate sculptures with an antique appearance with remarkable technical virtuosity, to the extent that many of his works were considered authentic Renaissance pieces for decades and are now held in important international collections. This sculpture stands out for its monumental presence, expressive power and refined polychromy, reflecting the 19th-century taste for the revival of the Florentine Renaissance. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
