Description
Ancient Indian frieze from the 11th century High-relief carved stone. Measures 100 x 40 cm. An architectural frieze depicting a sanctuary, comprising a succession of torso-naked apsaras, adorned with tightly cinched dhotis and richly ornamented, arranged between columns and geometric structures that create a continuous visual rhythm. The composition features two seated male figures identifiable as Hindu deities, possibly Vishnu and Shiva, in ceremonial poses. Below the main scene is a decorative band featuring stylised yali motifs and intertwined plant elements. The carving demonstrates a profoundly sculptural technique, with compact volumes and surfaces eroded by time that reinforce the archaeological character of the piece. The dynamism of the figures and the ornamental sensitivity are reminiscent of the sacred art of medieval India, where temple architecture incorporated complex iconographic programmes linked to devotional Hinduism. The work stands out for the narrative intensity of its relief and the symbolic richness of its celestial and protective figures. 100 x 40 cm.
