Estimate €2,000 - €3,000
Description
7th-century Chinese Buddha Carved from white marble. Measures 29 x 17 x 15 cm. A headless sculpture of a seated Buddha on an architectural throne, with his legs crossed and his feet resting on a support held by a human figure. The body is draped in a monastic robe with soft, orderly folds that conform to the anatomy with restraint and balance. The composition bears significant losses and fractures that emphasise its archaeological significance and the piece’s age. The throne features simple geometric forms and schematic decoration characteristic of Chinese Buddhist sculpture from the Tang Dynasty. The carving is notable for the serenity of its forms and the refined elegance of the folds, characteristic features of the spiritual classicism developed during the Tang Dynasty, a period of extraordinary artistic and religious flourishing in China. The work retains a powerful contemplative presence despite its fragmentary state. 29 x 17 x 15 cm.
