Description
Rare Temple Gargoyle from the Tang Period, Thailand Carved from beige sandstone. Measures 20 x 25 cm. An architectural gargoyle in the form of a yali’s head, with an open mouth, prominent eyes and a fierce expression conveying intense protectiveness. This fantastical creature features flowing hair and stylised features crafted with great sculptural vigour, originally intended to serve apotropaic functions within religious architecture. The carving shows signs of erosion, loss of material and surface wear consistent with its age and exposure to the elements. The expressiveness concentrated in the face and the simplification of form are reminiscent of Southeast Asian sculptural traditions influenced by Hindu and Indianised models. The piece demonstrates the symbolic importance of the yali as a protective creature associated with spiritual power and the defence of sacred spaces. Its intense visual presence and monumental character encapsulate the expressive energy of medieval Vietnamese architectural sculpture. 20 x 25 cm.
