Description
Biblical scene in high relief, Flemish or French School, 16th–17th century
High-relief carved wood with a dark patina. Measures 66 x 55 x 6 cm. This sculptural group, with its complex narrative composition, depicts a theological scene centred on a seated figure holding an open book, surrounded by bearded male figures arranged beneath an architectural framework of pilasters and entablatures. The figures on either side adopt meditative and solemn poses, with deeply chiselled drapery that lends dynamism and monumentality. The composition reveals influences from late Renaissance sculpture and Northern Mannerism, evident in the elongated figures and the restrained theatricality of their gestures. The quality of the carving, the richness of form and the expressive intensity underscore the high technical standard of the work, which was likely conceived as an element of an altarpiece or liturgical furnishings. The warm, antique patina reinforces the spiritual drama and visual depth of the whole. 66 x 55 x 6 cm.
