Description
Immaculate Conception, workshop of Gregorio Fernández, Castilian School, 17th century.
Polychrome wood sculpture. Dimensions: 75 cm high. An image of the Immaculate Conception standing on an architectural pedestal, with her hands clasped in prayer and her gaze directed forwards. The Virgin wears a brocaded tunic with floral decoration and a blue mantle adorned with gold motifs, whilst she rises above clouds and cherub heads. Her hair falls in long waves on either side of her face, and a metallic halo frames her head. The polychrome and gilded base features a stepped structure with ornamental motifs, reinforcing the devotional character of this Castilian Baroque sculpture associated with the workshop of Gregorio Fernández.
