Important patinated bronze tiger, Meiji period, Japan, 19th century Patinated bronze. Dimensions: 40 x 42 x 20 cm. An important sculpture depicting a tiger in a vigilant and menacing pose, resting on a naturalistic rock base. The beast is depicted with its mouth open, baring its fangs, in a dynamic pose that conveys strength and restrained tension. The quality of the anatomical modelling is remarkable, evident in the musculature, the rendering of the fur, and the expressiveness of the head—characteristic features of the finest Japanese bronze work of the Meiji period. During the second half of the 19th century, Japan experienced an extraordinary artistic expansion aimed at Western markets. Workshops specialising in bronze achieved a high level of technical skill, producing animal sculptures that combined naturalistic observation, technical virtuosity and decorative refinement. Tigers were one of these artists’ favourite subjects, symbolising strength, power and protection.
