Large 17th-century Italian statue of Saint Augustine Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 92 x 40 x 28 cm. A sculpture of Saint Augustine depicted in episcopal vestments and an ornate mitre, featuring a dynamic composition with a pronounced Baroque style. The figure extends his arms in a gesture of preaching or spiritual contemplation, whilst the ample folds of the cloak create a highly theatrical interplay of volume. The polychromy in shades of white, blue and gold is combined with delicate brocade and plant motifs that visually enrich the surface. The bearded face, with its intense spiritual expression, emphasises the intellectual and devotional dimension of the saint, a Doctor of the Church.
