Description
Virgin and Child, Spanish School, 17th century Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 82 x 30 x 22 cm. A sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in her arms, depicted in a solemn, frontal composition typical of Baroque devotional imagery. The Virgin is depicted wearing a blue tunic decorated with floral motifs and ample polychrome robes enriched with gold details, whilst the Child holds the orb as a symbol of his universal sovereignty. The faces display serene and expressive features that reinforce the spiritual and maternal dimension of the scene. The original polychromy, although showing signs of age, retains a remarkable chromatic and ornamental richness. The carving demonstrates meticulous execution in the folds of the drapery and the decorative details of the garments, revealing influences from 17th-century Spanish religious sculpture. The work combines devotional power, monumentality and artisanal refinement, standing out for its intense symbolic presence within the Baroque Marian tradition. 82 x 30 x 22 cm.
