Description
Important Virgin and Child, attributed to Sebastián Ducete (1568–1621), 16th-century Castilian Renaissance school
Gilded, polychrome and sgraffito carved wooden sculpture. Provenance: private collection, Madrid. Overall dimensions: 78 x 30 x 25 cm. Sebastián Ducete, a sculptor from Toro, in Zamora (1568–1621), was the son of another sculptor, Pedro Ducete, a member of a dynasty of artists of the same name who worked in Toro during the middle third of the 16th century. The relative obscurity of his father and his uncle, Juan Ducete, has led historians to conclude that he must have received supplementary training from a teacher active in the region, with clear Junian roots, given that he was a master of Renaissance sculpture in the style of Juan de Juni, to whose aesthetics and forms the Toro-based master’s work bears reference. Professor Vasallo Toranzo suggests the names of Bautista Vázquez, a teacher from León, and Juan de Montejo, who worked in Zamora, as possible teachers of Ducete. Bibliography: Vasallo Toranzo, L., Sebastián Ducete and Esteban de Rueda. Sculptors between Mannerism and Baroque, Institute of Zamorano Studies ‘Florián de Ocampo’, Salamanca, 2004.
