Description
Juan Bazcardo (1584–1653) – Spectacular Virgin in Glory from the 16th century
Monumental 16th-century wood carving, upholstered, gilded and polychrome – 150 x 65 x 40 cm. His personal style underwent a significant evolution due to the period in which he lived, being influenced by other leading artists, such as Gregorio Fernández, with whose works he must have been in direct contact. The main change he witnessed was the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, and more specifically from Romanist Mannerism to monumental Baroque. It is believed that he may have learnt the Romanist style he developed over many years from Diego Jiménez I of Viana and that he refined it under Pedro González de San Pedro, founder of the Cabredo workshop and a favoured collaborator of Juan de Ancheta, in his workshop in Pamplona, and with Diego and Andrés Jiménez, on the Yécora altarpiece. Juan Bazcardo later became the father-in-law of Diego Jiménez II, son of Andrés and grandson of Diego Jiménez I, through the marriage of his daughter Micaela.
