Description
Star Lot – Manuel Chili “Caspicara” (c. 1723–c. 1796) – Life-size bust of Saint John
Carved and polychromed wood with glass eyes. Dimensions: 47 × 35 × 18 cm. Carved in the round, this sculpture of Saint John the Evangelist belongs to the 18th-century Quito Colonial School. The figure conveys a serene and contemplative spirituality, distinguished by the delicacy of its facial modelling, harmonious proportions, and the refined treatment of the flowing drapery, which lends both elegance and movement to the composition. The finely executed polychromy enhances the naturalistic rendering of the flesh tones and the rich chromatic qualities of the garments, whilst the inset glass eyes heighten the lifelike expression and devotional character of the image. The meticulous craftsmanship reflects the technical mastery of polychrome wood carving characteristic of Spanish American Baroque sculpture. Its stylistic features place it firmly within the renowned Quito School, one of the most distinguished artistic traditions of Colonial Latin America, celebrated for the exceptional quality of its religious sculpture and its unique synthesis of Spanish and Indigenous artistic influences. This work stands as an excellent example of the aesthetic and spiritual ideals of 18th-century Colonial Baroque art, notable for its balanced composition, expressive power and outstanding artistic quality.
