Description
Featured Lot – Very Rare 19th-Century German Cuckoo Clock Automaton, Switzerland or Austria
Bone hands, in very good condition considering their age. Dimensions: 45 x 40 x 17 cm. Most of these artisanal companies are based in the Black Forest. Currently, there is only one manufacturer in Switzerland, although the cuckoo clock was not invented in Switzerland. Mechanical cuckoo clocks have two types of movement: one-day and eight-day. Clocks fitted with the first type of movement require the weights (made of cast iron) to be wound once a day; those fitted with the second type, once a week. It is worth noting that most cuckoo clocks manufactured today use the weight system; very few are wound. There are also cuckoo clocks with Swiss music boxes, which play a melody on the hour and half-hour strikes. Generally speaking, the eight-day clocks only play music on the hour, whilst in the one-day clocks the melody can be heard on both the hour and the half-hour.
