Description
Traditional cargo cart, Spanish Popular School, 19th century
Wood assembled with wrought iron fittings. An antique cart used for transporting agricultural goods in rural areas, constructed with a sturdy, open rectangular frame, large spoked wheels, and an extended drawbar. The piece retains traces of blue and red polychrome paint applied to the side panels and frame, lending it a distinctive folk and decorative character. The planks show cracks, wear and erosion from prolonged use and exposure to the elements, whilst the metal elements exhibit oxidation that visually enriches the whole with a rich historical patina. The design combines functionality with simple construction, typical of 19th-century Spanish rural craftsmanship, where the strength of the materials and practicality defined this type of working vehicle. Its formal authenticity, the richness of its aged textures, and the preservation of its original elements make this piece a valuable testament to traditional agricultural culture and a striking decorative object with a strong theatrical presence.
