Description
Rural cart with barred sides, Spanish Popular School, 19th century
Carved and assembled wood with wrought iron elements. An antique agricultural cart with an open frame, designed for animal-drawn transport, consisting of a rectangular platform, front rails, and large spoked wheels reinforced with metal rims. The vertical bars on the sides and the visible joinery emphasise the handcrafted nature of the piece, whilst the surface shows significant signs of wear, cracks, loss of polychromy and oxidation typical of prolonged rural use. The weathered texture of the wood and the presence of original fittings lend authenticity and visual depth to the whole. The construction follows traditional models of 19th-century Spanish vernacular carpentry, where agricultural functionality was combined with simple and robust construction solutions. The piece possesses remarkable scenographic and documentary power, constituting an outstanding example of rural material culture and decorative arts linked to the traditional ethnographic sphere.
