Description
Heraldic mortar with fleur-de-lis, France, 17th century Carved stone. Measures 42 x 63 cm. An important heraldic mortar, circular in shape with a slightly flared profile, decorated on the front with a heraldic shield carved in relief and surmounted by a stylised crown. The blazon features a central fleur-de-lis surrounded by mantling and scrolls with flowing lines. The sides display projecting architectural elements, reminiscent of corbels or structural reinforcements. The vigorous carving and robust modelling suggest that the piece was originally intended for outdoor or functional use. The old patina, in shades of pink and beige, together with stabilised cracks, erosion and surface wear, bears witness to long-term exposure to the elements and lends the piece material authenticity. The presence of the fleur-de-lis suggests a reference to the French nobility, although the wear prevents a precise heraldic identification. 42 x 63 cm.
