Universal equinoctial ring with sundial, Nicolas Bion, Paris, circa 1700 An exceptional equinoctial ring. Signed ‘N Bion A PARIS’, circa 1700, in bronze, comprising a meridian ring and an equatorial ring. The latitude scale is engraved with the names of European cities alternating with floral motifs. A rotating bridge features a scale of months and a zodiacal sphere adorned with engraved scrolls. The latitude scale is graduated from 0 to 90°, legible to the nearest degree. Hour divisions engraved in Arabic script (I to XII x 2). A magnificent instrument signed by Nicolas Bion (1652–1733), the King’s Engineer for Mathematical Instruments. Diameter: 9 cm.
